Discussion Question #2 (2/8/2010)
We meet three decisive women in the book: Grace, Lingongo, and Mama Muco. What are the strengths of each? How would the story have been different had any one of them lacked such strength?
Discussion Question #1 (2/1/2010)
In The Call of Zulina, the first book in the Grace in Africa series, Grace Winslow straddles two worlds. Do you see her as more African or more English? On what do you base your opinion?
Grace is herself torn between the two worlds. She’s not readily accepted in either, but to please her father she tries to be more English than African. I see that some of her rejection of her African heritage comes from her mother. Lingongo clings to her native beliefs while being a harsh domineering matriarch of the English household. Grace tries to please both mother and father; each of whom have different expectations. — Susan
